Six things about Ilford houses
Every area has its own particular awkwardness. Here it is halls, conversions and permits — and none of it is difficult when somebody has looked first.
Edwardian terraces with narrow halls
The default Ilford house. Bay front, tiled path, a hall you can touch both sides of, and a turn at the half-landing. The hall and the turn decide what leaves in one piece, so both get measured against the largest pieces before anything is lifted.
Loft conversions and side returns
Extremely common in Goodmayes and Seven Kings, and completely invisible in a bedroom count. A converted loft is a room of volume that nobody mentions on the phone; a side return usually means a kitchen twice the size we would otherwise expect.
Multi-generation households
More furniture, more rooms in use, and often two households moving at once. It is ordinary work here rather than exceptional, and the only thing it really changes is the crew size and the labelling.
Permit streets almost everywhere
Most of central Ilford is controlled parking on roads laid out before two cars per house. A dispensation or a suspended bay is the normal answer and Redbridge wants notice for it, so we ask about the road early.
Barking riverside blocks
Booked service lifts, reserved loading bays, protection to be fitted and frequently a managing agent who wants our insurance details first. The window is finite, so the load order is built backwards from it.
Larger houses towards Woodford
Detached and semi-detached stock with longer approaches and more in them. Bigger jobs, more crew, and a good share of them finishing outside London entirely.
